Mitch's Supper Club, St. Paul

Last night I went to Mitch's Supper Club in St. Paul to hear Don play in his jazz band. It was fun! Mimi bought me dinner and a drink, which was so nice of her. I got to meet some of Phillip's cousins and other family members that live in the twin cities area. Most of them were pretty surprised that Phillip was even married. That made me giggle. I took a lot of pictures, which you can see on Flickr if you are interested. I also made a little video of Mimi dancing with her umbrella, in true New Orleans fashion. She busts out the umbrella and dances to the last song of the night, every time. I'm sorry it's so dark, but it was night and the club didn't have very good lighting.

Here are some of my favorite photos from last night:

I didn't get any good photos of the pianist, but there are more on flickr if you're interested.

I also got to see some pretty horrible/disturbing/sad pictures from Mimi and Don's trip to NoLa. Supposedly, no one is allowed in certain sections of the lower 9th Ward, but they have friends that live near there. So their friends took them (quickly) through the area hit hardest by Katrina. Oh man, the pictures are horrible. It looks like the hurricane hit it yesterday instead of nine months ago. Mimi said that no cleanup has been done there, and the reality is that the whole area is going to have to be bulldozed. Pretty sad. I hope that New Orleans is spared during this years hurricane season. If LA is hit againg...man...that would just be too horrible to imagine.

For those of you who are into Jazz or just want something to do, the Bill Evans Jazz Band plays at Mitch's on the last Tuesday of every month from 7-10pm. From Jazz Police:

The name Mitch's is revered by older jazz fans in the Twin Cities. The Mitch family, original owners of this club, had a roadhouse in Mendota that was well-known in the 1940s and '50s for featuring the best local, national and international jazz musicians. In 1966, years after Mitch's closed, the Hall Brothers New Orleans Jazz Band revived the town's musical reputation when they opened the Emporium of Jazz on Hwy. 13. Evans has kept the band going, with occasional guest appearances by Stan and Russ Hall, since the Emporium closed in 1991.
