Queens Of The Stone Age- First Ave

Tonight The Hubs and I went to see Queens of the Stone Age at First Avenue. We got there at about 8:00 and the first band was on. They were pretty horrible, to be honest. We were upstairs sitting by one of the bars during the opener and after they were done we moved onto the floor by the stage.

The first thing I noticed when we got into the club was that the ratio of men to women was at least 30:1, maybe more. I think I saw about 20 chicks all night. Are there no female QOTSA fans out there or something? I swear I thought the place was going to be crawling with tits, since it was a true Rock show and all. But there were very few. But of course the chicks that were there were dressed in as little as possible, which made the dudes happy. I guess these chicks met their goal, which was to be total attention whores. I don't think they were there for the music at all. That's kind of annoying.

Anyway, we made our way onto the floor and got a pretty good spot. All was well for the 20 minutes we stood while waiting for QOTSA to take the stage. But once they came out, all hell broke loose. I can handle people surging to the front of the stage, but what I can't handle is the phenomenon known as the Mosh Pit. It started immediately by this douchebag:

The Doucebag That Started It All

Seriously. It was him. He pretty much slammed his way from the back of the room to right where we were standing and started an enormous, very violent, mosh pit. The hotter it got, the more men (and maybe 2 women) pushed and shoved and elbowed and kicked. It was fucking obnoxious. Within 2 minutes I was covered in beers. See? The douche is right there in the middle, with his smelly dreadlocks and nasty vest.

The Most Annoying Mosh Pit EVER!

About three songs into the set, The Hubs turned to me and said "I'm too old for this" and so he left. He went to the side bar and hung out there. Me? Hell, I stayed right where I was. We paid $30 for the tickets and I'll be damned if I'm going to stand on the sidelines behind a pole or a wall of people for 2 hours. So I did my best to keep my adrenaline in check, but I got a few really great pushes in there. At one point I was almost knocked over by one guy (he must have been all of 18 years old) and so I punched him good and then shoved him as hard as possible. He had the nerve to turn around and look at me like "what?" The pushing went on for the rest of the night, despite the fact that I moved around three or four times. For a little while I decided to stand next to one of the bouncers that was pushing the asshole kids away, but that only worked for a second or two. I left there with crushed toes, bruises on my arms and sides, and a rip in my tights. How the hell did that happen?

Despite the retarded moshing guys who were drunk on PBR and filled to the brim with testosterone, the show was awesome. Definitely in my top 5. I was surprised that they played 3s & 7s so early in the set and was also surprised that they didn't play anything from "Rated R", which is my favorite album. Of course, I was super happy that they played "Little Sister", "Make It Wit Chu", and "Misfit Love". I was hoping for "Better Living Through Chemistry" and "Leg of Lamb". Oh well. It was still a kick ass show.

I'm so glad we got to go. They were originally supposed to play at the Myth in Maplewood, but I guess ticket sales were poor. I'm happy about that because I can't get to Maplewood! I've been wanting to see QOTSA for years, and I'm so happy that tonight was the night. Here are some great photos I took. Click them to enlarge.

I am too old to put up with moshing...way to be a trooper. The guy that started it looked like the moshing type.
